Week 2, Monday

[After the meeting Takumi is once again on a Yuuko hunt]

[lutea]

[She's inside the master bed room, munching on some snacks and drinking, even though it's still daylight out.

When she sees him come in, she blinks, then calls him inside.]

Takumi-kun! Glad to see you're doing better. Would you like a snack?

[goldenmaniac]

[He tilts his head in surprise at the offer, then shrugs]

Sure!

[lutea]

It's all freshly made by Kimihiro, so I can attest to how good it is~

[He comes over to pick out a snack]

Are you free to talk for a bit, Yuuko-san?

[lutea]

Oh, of course!

[She take a swig of her drink.]

What's on your mind, Takumi-kun?

[He kinda feels bad for possibly bringing down her good mood with this]

The new servants... are they Erika and Karen?

[lutea]

[She doesn't even pause.]

I suppose you could say they're the same pieces, but on different sides.

[goldenmaniac]

Like in shogi. They don't remember us at all, or who they were... are they in any pain? Can they come back?

[lutea]

Exactly like in shogi! It's such an interesting game, you know.

[She chomps on a snack.]

They're in no pain, of course. and they'll be back to normal as soon as the game ends!

By normal do you mean dead?

[He's slowly learning his word play]

All pieces will be returned alive when the game ends.

[She lets the power of her words sink in.]

[He gasps, and an almost blinding hope rises in his eyes]

You... you used the Red- you really mean it...

[lutea]

Of course! Though this game is cruel, it isn't permanent.

Think of it like a game. Is a checker destroyed when they're captured? Is a rook or a bishop completely demolished beyond repair when you take it?

Of course not. You simply put it aside, and then place it back in the box when you're done.

[goldenmaniac]

I see...

[He's a little flabbergasted, honestly]

[lutea]

[She says nothing - just takes another drink and gently pushes the snacks towards him.]

[goldenmaniac]

[He sits and goes back to snacking, like a traumatized man to a bottle]

... you know, if that wasn't the case... I was going to ask that if I died... to not be brought back like that.

[lutea]

Unfortunately, I have to do it. It's part of the game, you see.

[She smiles, though a little sadly.]

I believe it's a kindness - this way, they can still be with the rest of you.

[goldenmaniac]

[He shakes his head]

Maybe for the others but- losing myself, it's too much.

[lutea]

Because of your past?

[taking a sip, she continues.]

...I see. Still, I cannot change it...it is written into the very rules of the game.

[goldenmaniac]

...I guess I just gotta not die, right?

[He sighs]

So how do you win? Getting all the pieces?

[lutea]

Mmm, there are certain conditions. But - yes, if I had almost all of you on my side, I would win...much like how you would win in checkers if your opponent was stupid enough not to resign when they were faced with a losing battle.

[goldenmaniac]

And the other Witch wins if we refute you for a certain about of time?

[lutea]

....It is more about who gives in first, and who has the capacity to keep fighting.

Though I am not permanently hurt by your denial, it will chip away at me...at who I am.

Meanwhile, my opponent must have the will to continue attacking me, despite losing more and more pieces.

That's frustratingly vague, Yuuko-san.

Who you are though. You said a lot about the idea of Witches when we first met- that it's as much about self-image and belief as it is literal magic. So that's why our denial hurts you?
