I see. That's how your magic works? Granting or removing misfortune?

[ It makes some sense, really. And while this makes for a much less detailed wish than the one she was intending, there might be less room for things to go wrong with this phrasing.

Yes. However, it is not just removing or granting - I can remove or grant that misfortune regardless of the flow of time.

....In essence, I can make it so that a fragment does not splinter, but is merely changed from what it would be. I control the concept of 'Misfortune' itself - and it is a concept many humans - well, mortals - place almost god-like reverence upon.

...After all, how many humans blame things that happen to them on 'bad luck?' Entire cultures have rituals to chase away misfortune, gods or goddesses that they pay off to stay away for the year.

Thus, to humans, I have an almost godlike power. Because I rule over what they worship, power is granted to me in return.

Forgive me for not quite understanding how this all works -- was that always your power, or did you only come into it when you took this title as a witch?

I only came into this kind of power as a Witch...though, truth be told, I was already amassing this kind of power even when I was trapped on earth.

It is more that I fully claimed my birthright rather than being given a new power.

Amassing misfortune, you mean?

Exactly.

[She smiles.]

I assume you're well aware of beings that can do that?

[Because. Well. Yokai.]

It's definitely not an unfamiliar concept.

Were you a human before, or something else?

[ Or both. ]

...A human, I believe. It's not as if I can remember much about it, though.

So it's different for you than it was for Watanuki-kun, then.

He's still practically a baby in Witch terms. I myself am no more than a child, but he's an infant in all respects.

Is that what it is?

...Does he know, by the way?

Oh, he knows. Or, at least, I hope he does, what with him having learned to more closely read the rules of a game before agreeing to play.

Still, I don't mind. It's the duty of those who come before to teach the young, correct? So I am teaching him how to be a real Witch.
